Separation & Discernment in Victoria, BC
Not sure whether to stay?
Before you decide, it's worth getting clear — honestly, and without pressure in either direction.
Where you might be
Standing at the crossroads
- One of you is leaning out, the other is holding on
- You've asked yourself 'is this even fixable?'
- You don't want to give up too soon — or hang on too long
- You're worried about the kids, the finances, the fallout
- You need clarity before you can make any decision
Getting clear is its own kind of progress
Not every couple who comes in is asking 'how do we make this better?' Some are asking a harder question: 'is this relationship still workable, and are we both willing to do the work?' That's a legitimate place to start — and a decision made in clarity is far kinder than one made in confusion or exhaustion.
I won't push you to stay, and I won't push you to leave. I'll help you find honest footing.
How the work goes
A structured way to decide with your eyes open
Discernment work is short, focused, and different from couples therapy: the goal isn't to fix the relationship yet, but to help you both reach clarity and confidence about a direction. We look honestly at what's happened, at each person's part in it, and at whether there's a real path to repair worth attempting. You might land on a committed effort to rebuild — moving into full couples therapy — or on separating with more understanding and less wreckage. Either way, you decide, with your eyes open. This is honest, respectful work in the spirit of Relational Life Therapy.
Not sure where you even stand right now? The free, private Discernment Assessment is a structured, 25-minute “should I stay or go?” reflection you can take on your own before you decide anything.
Questions
Separation & discernment questions
Isn't couples therapy supposed to save the relationship?
Not always at any cost. Good couples work sometimes starts with getting honest about whether both people want to do the work. Clarity is a valid, valuable outcome — even when it points toward separating.
What if one of us wants to stay and the other wants to leave?
That's the most common shape this takes, and it's workable. Discernment gives the leaning-out partner room to be honest and the leaning-in partner room to hope, without forcing a decision before either is ready.
Will you tell us what to do?
No. It's your decision. My role is to help you both see the situation clearly and honestly, so whatever you choose, you choose it on purpose.
Can this help us separate more peacefully?
Yes. If you do decide to part, doing it with understanding rather than in the heat of a crisis tends to be less damaging — especially when children are involved.
Do you offer this online in BC?
Yes. In person in Greater Victoria and securely online anywhere in British Columbia.
