FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things people most often want to know before they reach out. If yours isn't here, just ask.

General

What is relationship therapy?

Relationship therapy is focused work on the patterns between people — how you communicate, handle conflict, repair after a rupture, and stay connected. It can happen with a couple in the room together, or one-to-one with an individual working on how they show up in their relationships.

Who do you work with?

Mostly couples and men, plus individuals working on anxiety, stress, and repeating relationship patterns. My focus is relationships and the people navigating them.

Where are you located?

In person in downtown Victoria, BC, and securely online anywhere in British Columbia.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. I work with clients by secure video anywhere in BC, which is often easier around work, distance, or childcare.

Do you work with people outside Victoria?

Yes — online, anywhere in British Columbia. In person, I see clients across Greater Victoria and the wider Capital Region.

Couples

What happens in the first couples session?

We get a clear picture of your relationship and what brought you in, from both of you, and start to map the pattern you get stuck in. No one gets put on trial or ganged up on.

Do you take sides?

No. I don't take sides — I take the relationship seriously. Accountability applies to both partners, and I stay on the side of the relationship you're trying to build.

What if one of us wants therapy and the other doesn't?

You can start on your own. A lot of good relationship work begins with one person, and it often makes it easier for the other to join later.

Can couples therapy help after an affair?

Often, yes. Rebuilding after a betrayal is hard, common work — it takes honesty, accountability and time, and many couples come through it with a more honest relationship than before.

Do you work with couples considering separation?

Yes. Couples therapy isn't only about staying together at any cost. Sometimes the first step is getting clear about what's happening and whether both people want to do the work — and that clarity matters whatever you decide.

How long does couples therapy take?

Some couples come for a focused stretch of six to ten sessions; others stay longer to heal a deeper rupture. We talk openly about pacing and whether things are actually changing.

Men

Do you specialize in therapy for men?

Yes — relationship-focused therapy for men is a core part of my practice, especially men carrying a lot of responsibility who feel successful on paper but stuck at home.

What if I've never been to therapy?

That describes most of the men I see. My approach is direct and practical — we focus on what's happening now, what isn't working, and what you can do differently.

Is men's therapy mostly about talking about emotions?

Not the way you might picture it. Feelings come up because they're useful information, but the work is practical: name the pattern, understand it, and build skills you can actually use.

What if my partner thinks I need therapy?

It's worth taking seriously — a partner is often naming something real that's hard to see from the inside. Coming in is a sign of strength, not defeat.

Can I come alone for a relationship problem?

Absolutely. Individual work on your side of a relationship pattern is often what starts to change things at home.

Logistics

How much does therapy cost?

Individual sessions are $200 for 60 minutes and couples sessions are $300 for 90 minutes. The first 15-minute consultation is free.

How do I book?

Start with the free 15-minute consultation — book through the contact page, or call or text. If we're a fit, we'll schedule your first session from there.

Do you provide receipts, and are sessions covered by benefits?

I can provide a receipt for each session to submit to your extended health plan. Whether counselling is covered, and which credentials your insurer requires, depends on your specific plan, so confirm your coverage directly with them.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule so I can offer the time to someone else.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. I provide talk therapy. If medication might help, I can coordinate with your family doctor or a psychiatrist.

You don't have to figure this out alone.

The consultation is 15 minutes, by phone, and free. We'll talk about what's bringing you in, what you're hoping will change, and whether I'm the right person to help. No preparation, no pressure to book.
