Getting here

From Saanich to the office

Saanich is the largest municipality in Greater Victoria and it wraps around the city on three sides, so ‘coming from Saanich’ means something different depending on whether you're in Gordon Head, Cordova Bay, Royal Oak or Tillicum. The Shelbourne, Quadra and Blanshard corridors all feed into downtown, and the office is a few blocks off Blanshard on Johnson Street.

If you're coming from the north end of Saanich, an appointment either side of the commuter peak makes the trip considerably shorter.

What brings couples in

  • Conflict that keeps landing in the same place, no matter how it starts
  • Parenting differences that have turned into a standing argument
  • Two demanding jobs and no time left over for each other
  • Resentment quietly accumulating under the logistics
  • Trust broken, and no clear idea how to rebuild it

The work itself

Pattern first, then practice

We start with what actually brought you in, from both of you. Early on we name the loop that keeps repeating and the needs sitting underneath it on each side. Then we practise different ways of speaking, responding and repairing, in real time, so the change happens in your house and not only in my office.

I won't referee and I won't decide who's right. I'll be honest with each of you about your part in the pattern, and I'll stay on the side of the relationship you're trying to build. If you're not sure the relationship is still workable, that's a legitimate place to start — see separation and discernment.

And if the drive is the thing standing in the way, it doesn't have to be. I work by secure video with couples anywhere in British Columbia, and the work translates better to a screen than most people expect. Plenty of couples do a mix: in person when it suits the week, online when it doesn't.

Questions

Questions from Saanich

Where exactly are sessions held?

At 733 Johnson Street, Unit 228, in downtown Victoria — reachable from anywhere in Saanich. Secure video sessions are available anywhere in British Columbia.

We have young kids. How do people manage the timing?

Most couples with young children book either a mid-day slot or an evening one, and some do online sessions from home once the kids are down. We'll work out something realistic rather than something that collapses in week three.

How long does couples therapy take?

It depends what you're working on. Some couples need a focused six to ten sessions; others stay longer to heal a deeper rupture. We'll talk about pacing and progress openly rather than letting it run indefinitely.

Do you work with just one partner?

Yes. Individual therapy is available, and individual work on a relationship pattern is often where things start to move.

What's the first session like?

Ninety minutes. I'll want to understand the relationship and what brought you in, from each of you, and by the end you should have a clear sense of the pattern we're working with and what the work would involve.
