Getting here

From Esquimalt to the office

Esquimalt sits immediately west of downtown Victoria across the harbour, which makes the office on Johnson Street one of the closer counselling options available to you — a short trip along Esquimalt Road or the Old Island Highway.

Esquimalt is also home to CFB Esquimalt, and military life puts a particular kind of pressure on a relationship: postings, deployments, long absences, and the difficult work of coming back together afterwards. If that's your situation, say so early. It changes the pacing of the work and it's worth planning around rather than working around.

What brings couples in

  • Reconnecting after a long absence, and finding it harder than expected
  • One of you carrying something you haven't found a way to say
  • Conflict that escalates faster than either of you intends
  • Going quiet instead of fighting, for weeks at a time
  • A relationship that survives the crises and struggles with the ordinary weeks

The work itself

Honest, structured, and paced to what you're carrying

We name the pattern, we look at what each of you contributes to it, and we practise a different way of doing it. I work in Relational Life Therapy: direct without being harsh, warm without being soft, and unwilling to let either of you sit outside the work.

A large part of my practice is men — often men who are competent everywhere and stuck at home. The armour made sense once. The work is noticing what it costs now and learning, specifically, how to set it down.

If either of you is carrying trauma from service or from anything else, that deserves proper care. I'll be straight with you about what I can help with and where a referral would serve you better.

And if the drive is the thing standing in the way, it doesn't have to be. I work by secure video with couples anywhere in British Columbia, and the work translates better to a screen than most people expect. Plenty of couples do a mix: in person when it suits the week, online when it doesn't.

Questions

Questions from Esquimalt

How far is the office from Esquimalt?

It's just across the harbour at 733 Johnson Street in downtown Victoria — one of the shorter trips of any municipality in the region.

Do you work with military families?

I work with couples and individuals dealing with long absences, difficult reunions, and the pressure that comes with demanding, structured work. If there's service-related trauma involved, I'll tell you honestly whether I'm the right fit or whether a specialist referral would serve you better.

What if one of us is deployed or away often?

Secure video sessions make it possible to keep working through an absence, subject to connection and schedule. Some couples use that time for individual work and resume together on return.

Do you offer evening appointments?

Evening and later-afternoon slots exist and fill quickly. Ask in the free consultation.

What does it cost?

Couples sessions are 90 minutes at $300; individual sessions are 60 minutes at $200. The first 15-minute consultation is free.
