Premarital Counselling in Victoria, BC
Premarital counselling in Victoria, BC
Build the skills before you need them — and go into marriage with your eyes open and your toolkit ready.
Why come now
Before the wedding, not after the trouble
- You're engaged, or seriously heading that way
- You want to talk through the big stuff — money, family, kids, roles
- You've noticed a recurring snag you'd rather understand now
- You're blending families, or navigating different backgrounds
- You'd rather learn to fight well before you have to
The best time to learn the skills is before you need them
Most couples arrive at therapy years into a pattern that could have been named early. Premarital work flips that: you build the communication and repair skills, surface the assumptions you each carry, and talk honestly about the topics couples most often collide on — before they become the same fight.
It's not about testing your relationship. It's about strengthening it.
How the work goes
Honest conversations, real skills
We map how each of you learned to do relationships — the models you grew up with — and where those might mesh or clash. We talk through the practical flashpoints (money, family, careers, children, roles, sex, expectations), not to script your marriage but to make sure you're actually talking about them. And we build the core skills: speaking without attacking, listening without defending, and repairing quickly when you rupture. It's the same relational toolkit I teach in couples work, grounded in Relational Life Therapy — just delivered early, while it's easiest to learn.
Questions
Premarital counselling questions
Isn't premarital counselling only for couples with problems?
Not at all. It's a strengthening exercise, not a warning sign — like training before an event rather than treatment after an injury. Strong couples do it precisely because they want to stay strong.
How many sessions is it?
It's flexible. Some couples want a short, focused set of sessions covering the essentials; others go deeper. We'll shape it to what you want to cover.
What topics do you cover?
Communication and repair skills, family-of-origin patterns, and the practical flashpoints couples most often hit — money, family, children, roles, careers, intimacy, and expectations.
Do you do premarital counselling online?
Yes. In person in Greater Victoria and securely online anywhere in British Columbia.
You don't have to figure this out alone.
The consultation is 15 minutes, by phone, and free. We'll talk about what's bringing you in, what you're hoping will change, and whether I'm the right person to help. No preparation, no pressure to book.
