In British Columbia, counselling with a registered clinical counsellor typically costs about $140 to $225 per 50-minute session under the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors’ 2026 fee guide. Couples sessions and longer appointments cost more. Extended health plans often help less than people expect. In one Canadian employer survey the median annual maximum for counselling was $750, and most plans capped it at $1,000 or less. The calculator below estimates your out-of-pocket cost from your plan’s numbers.

Fees & FAQ

What counselling costs in British Columbia

The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors publishes a fee guide for its members. Its 2026 guide suggests these rates per 50-minute session (BCACC, 2026):

ServiceNewer counsellors (under 3 years)Experienced counsellors
Individual$140–$155$155–$175 (up to $225 for specialized services)
Couples & family$155–$175$175–$205

Real prices in Victoria sit in a similar band. I went through local practices’ published rates in what couples counselling costs in Victoria. Longer sessions cost proportionally more. A 90-minute couples session often gets more done than two shorter ones, because you don’t spend the first twenty minutes getting back up to speed.

How extended health benefits usually work

Most Canadians who have counselling coverage get it through an employer’s extended health plan, and the limits are often modest. The Canadian Psychological Association, drawing on the 2022 Benefits Canada Healthcare Survey, reports a median annual maximum of $750 for mental health counselling. Sixty-one percent of employers capped it at $1,000 or less. The CPA itself recommends $3,500 to $4,000 a year (CPA, 2023). The CPA is an advocacy body, so read its recommendation as a position. The survey figures are what matter for budgeting.

Two details trip people up. Plans usually name the professions they reimburse, often registered clinical counsellors, psychologists and social workers, and not every therapist qualifies. And couples sessions may be claimable under only one partner’s plan, or split between both, depending on the insurer.

Can you claim counselling as a medical expense on your taxes?

Sometimes. The Canada Revenue Agency’s medical expense tax credit only covers practitioners it lists as authorized in your province. For British Columbia, CRA’s table currently lists psychologists and social workers as authorized but marks “counselling therapist” as not applicable (CRA). Check the table, or ask a tax professional, before you count on a credit.

Cost is a real barrier

In the Commonwealth Fund’s 2023 international survey, 15% of Canadians who needed mental health care cited cost as the reason they didn’t get it, higher than the 10-country average of 11% (CIHI, 2024). Of the Canadians who did access mental health support in the past year, 53% used privately funded services (Mental Health Research Canada). If cost is what’s stopping you, ask about reduced fees. Many practices, including mine, set some aside.

How this tool was built

The calculator multiplies the fee by the number of sessions, then applies your plan’s percentage, any per-visit limit, and the annual maximum minus what you’ve already used. For couples sessions you can choose whether both partners’ maximums apply. It assumes all the sessions fall in one benefit year, and it ignores deductibles and HSA or wellness accounts. Fee ranges come from the BCACC 2026 fee guide, and typical maximums from the survey data the CPA reports. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Common questions

How much does therapy cost in BC?

The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors' 2026 fee guide suggests about $140 to $175 per 50-minute individual session for most counsellors, up to $225 for specialized services, and $155 to $205 for couples and family sessions. Longer sessions cost proportionally more.

Does extended health insurance cover counselling?

Many plans do, but often with modest limits. One Canadian employer survey found a median annual maximum of $750 for mental health counselling. Plans also specify which professionals they reimburse, so check that your therapist's designation is covered.

Is couples counselling covered by insurance?

It depends on the insurer. Some reimburse couples sessions under one partner's plan, some allow the receipt to be split, and some treat it differently from individual counselling. Ask before you book, using the questions this calculator lists.

Can I claim counselling on my taxes in BC?

Only if the practitioner is one CRA lists as authorized for BC. CRA's table currently lists psychologists and social workers for BC, while counselling therapists are marked not applicable. Check CRA's table or a tax professional for your situation.

Is MSP coverage available for counselling in BC?

MSP generally doesn't cover private counselling. Some publicly funded and community programs offer free or low-cost counselling, often with waitlists.

Do you offer reduced fees?

Yes. I set aside six reduced-fee appointments a week, $60 for a 60-minute individual session and $90 for a 90-minute couples session, for people in BC without coverage for whom the standard fee is a barrier. See the fees page for details.
